Garth ::adoptED::
In January of 2020 Garth’s rescuer @imjihye1222 found several dogs chained up in the woods as she walked down a path in Namyangju City, South Korea. Their owner neglected them so Julia made it her mission to visit the dogs every few days with food and water. Even with the horrible environment the dogs lived in, they were so thrilled for her visits and showed her unconditional love.
After Wildhearts agreed to take in the pups (and after nearly a year of Julia caring for them & promoting their adoption in South Korea) she finally convinced their owner to give them up. When she went to pick up the dogs she found that the owner had sold them to a dog meat farm. She rushed to find them and luckily was able to get them back just in time.
Julia took both Garth and Lucky (who is now a Wildhearts pup too) to the vet and discovered Garth had heartworm disease. He was treated and was then moved to a private shelter. Garth spent several weeks living outside there in the freezing cold before his flight to the US. Garth has never lived in a home before (let alone inside) and this new life is a big adjustment for him!
A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE Garth THINGS FROM his FOSTER family…
Garth is a LOVE BUG. This sweet, snuggly boy loves to be with people. Indoors his temperament is gentle and adoring. He will happily curl around your feet or climb into your lap to give you a hug. He is very smart and a quick learner, knows the command “SIT” and, after doing a very cute happy dance, will sit to wait for his food to be served or for his leash to be put on. He is also eager for walks and can’t get enough of outdoor time — he’s fascinated by birds and squirrels and all the exciting smells he encounters. Although he would rather be in a human lap 24/7, he’s content to go to his crate when it’s time for a nap or sleep.
A FEW THINGS Garth IS WORKING ON FROM his FOSTER family…
Garth is SO excited to go on walks that he pulls quite a bit on the leash — he is cooperative on a transitional halter and streetwise about stopping at intersections, but it will take additional training for him to get the hang of it. He will get shy and bury his head if he feels stressed or overwhelmed — triggering situations can be loud noises, new people or too much stimulation. He seems disinterested in other dogs, so it could take time for him to warm up to socializing with a fellow dog in his new home. He likes being with people so sleeping in his crate can sometimes make him vocal at night if he wakes up and no one is around — keeping the crate sheltered from noise and light will help him sleep contentedly through the night.
THE IDEAL FAMILY FOR Garth WOULD HAVE THE FOLLOWING:
A quiet, calm household.
A home without other dogs.
Garth is happy to say hello other dogs but otherwise seems disinterested. He has a history of being dominant with other dogs. They pick up on this and tend to not enjoy Garth’s company.
A family who will keep Garth active while continuing to work on his leash manners & anxiety around the outside world.
Patience!
