Kali

In September of 2021 Kali was found roaming around an apartment complex all alone in the middle of the night. She was brought to the local, high-kill pound in Asan, South Korea wearing a plain collar with no tag. No one ever came to claim her and Kali ended up living in a small, wire cage for 4 months without any adoption interest. Despite the tough environment, she was loving to all humans and dogs that she came across. She especially loved to socialize with the other dogs on group walks! Once we offered to help Kali she was taken in by an amazing foster family in South Korea who made her feel like a part of their family. We are so grateful for all of the love that they have shown her. See her journey on our Instagram page here.

A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE Kali THINGS FROM her FOSTER FAMILY…

Kali is an extraordinarily sweet and curious little pup. She has some initial shyness towards strangers but warms up quickly. She loves a good pet or scratch behind her ears and on her cheeks. She is very curious about other animals in general but is particularly enthusiastic about other dogs. She has seemingly endless time and energy for playing in the yard with her host dog-brother and would do very well in a home with another dog.

She is very food motivated: breakfast, dinner, and all snacks are eaten with the same, unwavering level of enthusiasm. Treats have proven to be a good training tool, and she picked up the “sit” command within about two days using food as a motivator. Chew toys, particularly anything with a squeaker, will be a big hit with Kali — though she tends to pull out squeakers quickly, so go for the heavy-duty toys. She doesn’t typically go for shoes or stuffed animals, but when she does, she responds well to an assertive “eh!” and immediately drops whatever she’s been chewing on. She shares her toys well, and we have never seen her become possessive and growl or lash out (which cannot always be said of her host brother).

She has a generally unflappable temperament and is seemingly unbothered by new sounds and objects in the households, even things as crazy as a broom or vacuum cleaner (also the same cannot be said of her host brother). Kali’s crate is her preferred refuge, napping area, and bed, so she is well crate-trained. Though she’s mostly fine resting and relaxing through the work day, she has accompanied her foster mom on shorter runs (3-5 miles) and never seems to flag in energy.

A FEW THINGS Kali IS WORKING ON FROM her FOSTER FAMILY…

Kali used an indoor pee-pad with her fosters in Korea and seems to still be adjusting to the idea that you shouldn’t actually go potty in the house. She will need some continued training on this!

Kali gets distracted outside and needs continued training to not pull on leash.

She’s also working on waiting patiently for a release command when going outside or back inside again and will bum-rush the door, given the opportunity. There have been a few incidents where she’s bolted out of the front door while we grab our mail. She’s made it to the sidewalk and raced away down the block! Luckily she returned after some chasing and squeaking of her favorite toy — but she’s definitely a flight risk and you’ll want to have a system in place around doors and gates.

THE IDEAL FAMILY FOR Kali WOULD HAVE THE FOLLOWING:

  • A fenced yard.

  • A friendly, already trained dog in the home or access to active dogs for frequent playdates.

  • A lot of patience, eagerness to continue training, consistency, & lots of love!
