Perry ::ADOPTED::

Perry is a darling old fella who has had quite the journey to finally join us! Back in June of this year he was dumped at a kill shelter in South Korea with a pretty gnarly urinary infection. We can only assume his family didn’t want to deal with his medical needs. He had obviously been cared for with a fresh haircut and was at a healthy weight. The shelter gave his family ten days to claim him but they never came.

Since then, Perry has transitioned from foster home to foster home. Each time we had a flight booked for him something came up with his health and we had to find him a new placement. After staying with four great foster families in South Korea (and flying across the world) we are so pleased with how he’s doing. Perry quickly settled in with his Portland foster fam, a new routine, and our training program. He is a smart, goofy fella with a lot of love to offer. We are obsessed with his little bear paws and piglet physique!

A few of our favorite Perry things from his fosterS…

Perry is a sweet, charming guy who just wants to be by your side. He is a little cuddle bear who loves snoozing, going on car rides and walks, being brushed, and eating, eating, eating. When outdoors, he is gentle on leash but wants to meet all the dogs (and chase all the squirrels and cats and birds). His favorite morning ritual, aside from breakfast, is taking every toy out of his foster family’s basket of dog toys. He sleeps completely through the night in his crate, and he’ll take any chance to snuggle up with you or otherwise lounge around.

Perry is quickly learning “here,” “place,” and "heel" with regular reinforcement, and he's smart about picking up new patterns. He is eager to learn and highly treat-motivated, and he has shown a great amount of growth when given consistency and structure.

A few things Perry is working on from his fosters…

Perry has some separation anxiety, mostly showing as barking, and he would prefer to have an eye on where his humans are in the home. Though he loves his crate, he would rather not be left alone in it during the day unless he decides to nap. With CBD and a little bit of time to understand his people’s patterns, he’s calmed down and has been more secure. He doesn’t mind when humans leave the house as long as another is still around. He will need someone committed to working on this anxiety while showing him that he’s stable in his forever home.

Perry also has some hearing loss, though he generally hears sounds from within the same room. He does better with commands when they’re visually reinforced, and it’s easy to startle him if he’s looking away. We think this may be contributing to his need to see where his people are.

He is also exceptionally food-focused, so he will need training around staying calm at mealtime, not diving after or snatching food, and dropping food you don’t want him to eat. He will likely always need to be fed separately from other animals in the home.

We think Perry would be great as an only dog, but he wouldn’t mind an easygoing companion as long as he feels like he’s the center of your world.

The ideal home for Perry would offer the following:

- An adult-only family who mostly works from home pre & post COVID-19 and is still willing to help Perry with his separation anxiety.

- An attentive eye to keep him from gobbling up anything in sight.

- Daily walks/outings.

- Dedication to Perry’s current and longterm health by being proactive with his senior dog needs (see medical concerns below) by administering medications and following our muzzle protocol.

- A basket full of different textured toys for him to root around in every morning.
