Pip ::ADOPTED::

Pip is one of the 60+ dogs that were found locked away during the winter of 2019 in a hoarding situation outside of Asan, South Korea. Over the past several years the dogs were left to breed and their numbers grew into the hundreds. At least half of the dogs perished due to the horrific conditions they were forced to live in. Many died from illness, neglect, dog fights, and also from human consumption. The hoarders were reported to the city government and slowly dogs are being pulled out and placed into the city shelter when there is space available. Pip and 23 other dogs were brought to the Asan city pound in January of 2020 and he was lucky to only spend 5 months at the shelter before finding a foster home in May. He was adored by his South Korean foster family! We think he might have morphed into a cat during his stay there though. Pip’s favorite things are napping, sunshine, & napping in the sunshine. He’s a weird little muppet and we hope he stays that way.

From Pip’s foster-to-adopt family

What our family loves about Pip is that in spite of his rough start to life he holds no grudges. He loves everyone and somehow knew right away that we would adore him back. (You can almost see the ❤s coming from his eyes!) He portions his time between all members of the family making sure we all get a chance love on him. He gets along perfectly with other dogs and matches their energy level. Never fights or nips. He only barks at squirrels.

Pip is super smart! He learned to use the doggy door within a matter of hours and has never "gone" in the house. He is still learning that cars are not bad and until we conquer that activities are limited. He would love agility courses; he just has to get there without melting down! He also needs some work on coming when called. For him, this is optional unless there is a treat involved. We look forward to teaching him more about the good things that life can bring.

A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE Pip THINGS FROM His Portland FOSTER family earlier in the year:

Everyone automatically falls in love with Pip. He has big expressive eyes and is full of love and quirkiness in the best possible way. His eyes and his tail tell you everything you need to know about how he's feeling...and sometimes he uses his voice too. Pip has a great mix of independence, love, curiosity, and structured playfulness with a touch of stubbornness.

He has a calm, inquisitive demeanor and his default mode is chill vibes. He loves nothing more than to curl up in a sunspot on a nice cushy bed while you work from home. He's motivated by other dogs and takes their lead. He won't ask you for a walk, but if he sees your pup getting excited and ready, then he will get excited too. He needs external motivation, otherwise, he'll nap all day!

He's a funny, quirky guy who likes playing with toys and other dogs, fetching (kind of... mostly he likes the chase), ear rubs, and most of all butt rubs. He'll let you know he wants more affection by reaching out and tapping you with his paw or giving you an intense side-eye as he rests the side of this body on you. It's truly so adorable and funny to watch!

Beds that he can nest in, in every room is a must as is snuggling under blankets on the couch at night. He loves to be "up high" so he can observe and we've been setting boundaries about where it's "OK" to be and where's it's not. He knows "off" and will usually grumble and groan a little as he hops down. He'll also grumble when it's time for a potty break before bed - he's loves being comfortable and is annoyed that he has to move and go outside in the cold!

He knows his name, how to sit, stay and go to his crate and we're working on "down". He still needs practice at these commands in situations where distractions are present as this is when his stubbornness comes in.

Pip is very adaptable and curious about new situations. So far he's gone out to eat at a patio restaurant, to the hardware store, and to a backyard get-together with other dogs and toddlers and was incredibly curious and calm. He hasn't shown any adverse reactions to any humans or dogs, but he does best with dogs that are calm or slightly more energetic than he is. He doesn't know what to do with dogs that are hyper and just ignores them.

A FEW THINGS Pip IS WORKING ON FROM His Portland FOSTER familY

Hang on tight to that leash as he wants nothing more than to chase squirrels and watch out for "sidewalk snacks". He's food motivated, but not overly so and both he and my dog have been given treats next to each other without and resource guarding. He usually takes a treat and runs off with it somewhere to eat it away from everyone.

His stubbornness tends to kick in when he's distracted by something he wants, that you have. During feeding, he has to sit and wait before he's allowed to go to his food. He'll wait a bit after the command, back up and then sit...and sometimes groan too.

He sleeps very well in his crate and sometimes you hear a Pip peep, but he is mostly quiet. Car rides still make him nervous. He displays anxiety when the car is moving by panting and shaking, so make sure he has plenty of water to drink when you arrive at your destination. He occasionally barks and whines in the car, but it has been rare.

Pip's biggest stress is when left home alone in his kennel, even with other dogs present and music playing. He pants in his crate, cries, whines and barks, and aggressively "fluffs" his blanket. The crying/whining/barking seems to be intermittent throughout the time you are gone. Thus far, I haven't seen anything that would make me concerned for his safety.

Pip also really enjoys structure and knowing what he can expect and when. Thus far his routine has been to wake up, stretch his legs, go for a walk, eat breakfast and then play for 10 mins, and then nap! He will let out a gruff little bark if he sees someone on the sidewalk or approaching the house, but mostly during the day, he's napping or observing out the window.

I think he would do best in a home with another dog as he's not particularly self-motivated, but being around other dogs puts a pep in his step. He's also not a dog that's looking to please his human so another dog that demonstrates acceptable behavior is something that he responds well to.
