Sherry ::ADOPTED::

In August of 2020 Sherry was found out in the rain in the rural outskirts of Yongin City, South Korea. From there she was taken to the city pound where she lived on a chain outside. A volunteer named Becca was visiting the pound in December and fell in love with Sherry. She couldn’t leave her behind and chose to take Sherry home to foster her. Sherry was heartworm positive and needed a warm, safe place to receive treatment and recover. Becca brought Sherry into her home when she was incredibly sick and had no fight left in her. Thanks to Becca and the YPAP rescue team, Sherry has a new lease on life and is ready to find her forever family here in Portland!

It is clear that Sherry has had a rough life. There are various scars on her body and she could really use some continued TLC. Regardless of her age, this gal has a lot of love to share. We adore her giant, polar bear head and how she rubs her face on humans to cuddle, much like a cat. Her dream come true would to just be an integral part of her forever family.

A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE Sherry THINGS FROM her FOSTER family…

In three words Sherry is sweet, gentle, and quiet. She has a calm presence and is happiest near her humans. Sherry loves being around her people and meeting new people. She truly is excited to meet any new human that comes her way - on walks or in her home. In her typical, gentle fashion she is slow to approach, wags her tail after a few sniffs, and finally welcomes all pets and love from her new human friends! She never jumps or is pushy for affection.

Sherry is a very quiet gal. When other dogs bark loudly from neighboring backyards or while passing dogs on walks, even when frustrated, she has never responded with a bark. She is smart, food motivated, and has picked up “sit”, “stay”, and “come” quite quickly at home. Learning “down” has been a bit of a process! She’s also getting better each day with name recognition.

Sherry loves to nap outside! We think she has spent her life outdoors and it will take some time for her to adjust to being an indoor dog. Finding her sleeping out in the sun is such a heartwarming sight! She’s pure goodness, this girl.

A FEW THINGS Sherry IS WORKING ON FROM her FOSTER family…

Sherry is working on leash manners. She sometimes pulls on walks when she sees something interesting up ahead; sometimes she isn't phased by a squirrel or passing dogs but other times she is extremely interested and pants loudly. Now she is walking with a training leash and that is helping with her pulling immensely.

One of the most tricky things about Sherry is that she’s hard to read. She is such a quiet girl! Sometimes she paces back and forth inside, and other times she rests all day. It may be due to her recovering from heartworm and not feeling 100% or she may just need more time to settle in and feel secure. Her favorite place is out in the yard so she possibly could just be adjusting to life as an indoor dog.

Sherry has made a lot of progress in her crate in just the last week! She is quiet when in her crate but has a hard time entering the crate without a lot of encouragement and a gentle push. Though it’s possible she had a recent breakthrough!

She is aware of her size which lends to her cuteness. She doesn’t love turning around to get out of a space, opting to back out of spaces so she doesn’t accidentally run into anything. Possibly one of the reasons why she struggles to go into her crate.

She is a little jumpy with sudden loud noises in her immediate space. When startled she gets wide eyed and cowers her head but quickly recovers.

Along with Sherry’s leash manners, she needs to be exposed to more small animals (at a safe distance) to work on her possible prey drive and impulse control. We will continue to work with her forever family on training as she doesn’t appear comfortable in a setting with other animals, even dogs her size. That being said, she doesn’t bark in these situations and doesn’t cause a disturbance.
