Yeona ::ADOPTED::
This foxy, lil’ lady was found abandoned at a busy complex in Asan, South Korea. In August of this year a security guard reported Yeona and she was taken to the high kill shelter. She was called “Heart” by shelter staff because of her face markings and sweet personality. She looooves people! They found out that she was heartworm positive and treated it before she was placed with an amazing foster family in South Korea. She’s now here in Portland with continued, unconditional foster love from @jamie.letourneau
Yeona is still recovering from her heartworm treatment and spends most of her days napping in her self-made fox dens.
A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE YeOna THINGS FROM Her FOSTER Mom…
Yeona is a quirky little snuggle bug who simultaneously resembles a fox and a shrunken large dog. She is a heart melter with her sweet demeanor, silly army crawls of pawing, and her welcoming of all the belly scratches and velvety ear rubs. She’s trusting of new people when positively introduced and eagerly trots up. I think she’ll be a loyal dog to her person but its nice that new people are her friends! She is happiest when burrowed up in blankets, resting against your leg, or out walking. She is gentle and sweet and does not withhold kisses! I’m seeing her silly and weird personality come out more each day as her confidence grows with new experiences. Each day she plays a bit more. But otherwise she’s snoozing every chance she gets.
That said, Yeona loves walks! And its cute to see her prance and hop when she knows we’re getting ready to go. She’s a great walker who naturally heals because of her love for humans. She’s curious about new sounds and people but isn’t bothered much by loud stuff, just keeps on confidently walking like she’s always on a mission.
Yeona is a fast learner and already knows “sit”, “shake” and “here”. She’s pretty much nailed down “wait” as it helps her with impulse control while pausing at thresholds including exiting her crate.
Although brief, Yeona is playful, almost more cat like, as she paws at your hands and “army crawls” towards you. She appreciates people being down on the ground interacting with her and patting around since she’s a tiny one.
While Yeona does love people, she doesn’t seem needy, does not beg for food or stare you down for anything. So she naturally complied with “place” training, but could use more specific practice.
A FEW THINGS Yeona IS WORKING ON FROM her FOSTER mom…
Yeona doesn’t love other dogs. If they growl or bark first, she’ll get riled up and growl back. But she is easy to calm down with a stern “Leave it” or “Wait” and sometimes even stopping until the dog passes out of sight. We are working on finding an older or at least very calm dog for her to interact with.
Territorial barks, (a few low “ruffs”) if someone comes in the house and catches her by surprise, no yapping or freak outs though.
Positive redirection and positive playtime. She can be possessive with toys so she needs encouragement that “letting you have it” so it can be thrown again, is a good thing! (Treats and pets are helping.)
Crate training. Yeona absolutely hated her crate at first but is tolerating it much more lately with cozy blankets and a bed. We are working towards her going in on command instead of being put in halfway with a gentle butt tap ;) When exiting in the morning, as the door is opened, we “wait” until she’s given the “ok” to come out.
Feeling safe on the linoleum, (kitchen floor), with encouraging interactions on it.
Feeling safe and calm on car rides and staying in her spot; not jumping over to you.
