Yuhan: adoptED

In March of this year Yuhan was discovered on the streets of Asan, South Korea with his siblings and mom. Sadly, their mother ran away and was never found. Yuhan and his teeny, tiny siblings were brought to the city pound and waited there to find forever families. The pound is not a safe place for such a young & fragile pup but luckily an amazing foster family stepped up to take in Yuhan after his siblings were adopted and he was left behind.

With his foster family he learned “how to dog” but, because he was so timid, hadn’t been exposed to much. Walks in particular have been a big challenge for Yuhan and he could only walk a short distance before planting his tush on the ground. He’s going on full walks now with his Portland foster family (with very little resistance)! We adore this little, red panda and he’s come such a long way since his arrival to Wildhearts!

From Yuhan’s foster family…

Yuhan is a wonderful pup and has been a delight to host. He is the calmest puppy we have ever encountered. He loves to play in small bursts with his foster sibling, but he is so content to relax and chew, or walk and sit with you. He is a true companion dog, and has been to the coast with us multiple times and is putting in about 1-2 miles of walking a day! Yuhan is small enough to fit into a large tote and loves to be carried in it for longer trips/hikes. A dog backpack would be a really good route to go as he gets older. Yuhan gets very excited to adventure, and riding in the car may be his favorite thing. He will lay right down once he is belted in and will calmly nap until we get where we are going. He doesn’t mind being handled and will let you pick him up, touch his feet, and will roll over for full on belly rubs on a regular basis now.

Food carts, parks, patios, Forest Park to Rooster Rock, Yuhan is exploring it all. Yuhan is good with other dogs and people with slow introductions, if you do not come up to him/us suddenly. He will startle and bark once or twice if woken from a nap suddenly.  If walking on leash, Yuhan is extremely good at ignoring most distractions, and if distracted by an unruly dog, bird or squirrel, is easy to turn away and calm down. He doesn’t tug too much on the leash, and seems to enjoy the pressure when getting into busier areas. Yuhan is vocal in the sense of grumbles and little growls. These growls are rarely aggressive or territorial, but more of his way of telling us about his day. He really likes to grumble at you after he has had his kennel time. We have left him most days for at least an hour to acclimate to the kennel during the day, and this week he has really been more calm as we come in and waited patiently to be released. Night time in the kennel with Yuhan has always been easy, he knows that is his place to be. In the morning he will let you sleep and doesn’t whine, while waiting patiently for us to get ready to take him out.

Yuhan is a smart little cookie and is learning basic commands, sit, down, wait, come and paw/shake. He loves his kibble and treats, but doesn’t seem too fond of banana or peanut butter yet. He loves his wood chew or sticks, and if ever is mischievous and snags a random sock, you can easily take it and give him a toy or chew. He has never shown interest in chewing furniture or cords and has not caused any damage. He has had a few puppy accidents, but this week is going on 7 days accident free! We are also working on pressure leash training inside, he is still getting the hang of that, and “place” training. He is learning that it’s okay not to have us in eye sight all day long!

Yuhan with a single person or couple would be awesome! He is just so small that I think children would need to be really careful with him, and he’s really not a rambunctious puppy. Yuhan is very chill during the day inside, our walks and outings seem to be more than enough to release his energy. We think he would do good with a companion dog, especially since he is so young to keep teaching him how to dog, but he does seem pretty independent on his own even with our resident dog around. We know Yuhan, The Sweet and Brave, will make an absolute doll of a companion who will be totally down to go with you anywhere, and is content to be carried along to explore with you on the longer adventures.
