Jackie

::ADOPTED::

In December of 2020, the organization @we.a.c.t received a tip about a dog meat farm in Chuncheon, South Korea and they were requested to investigate. They visited the site and were shocked to find that it was an illegal puppy mill that had been in business for over 10 years. The man who ran the operation was a fraud who faked the conditions on his blog and YouTube channel. In reality, his business was a horrendous, outdoor breeding farm full of different purebred dogs (puppies, males, and pregnant dogs) who were all sick. There was no clean water or fresh food for them in sight or protection from the elements.

Jackie was found outdoors all alone in a rusty metal cage, sitting pitifully inside a empty food bowl. WeAct later found out that Jackie had 3 puppies (Hanu, Haroo, Howl) all separated from her in another cage. We believe that Jackie is also the mother of recently adopted Suzy (now Kasper) with likely many litters of puppies in her past.

Within the last few weeks the breeder began operations again under a new business name. Here at Wildhearts we have a soft spot for mama animals who have been repeatedly exploited and violated for profit. Please consider adopting vs. buying from a breeder!

At Jackie’s intake exam she tested positive for a bad case of heartworm and was placed in a foster home to rest during her treatment. Unfortunately her first foster was unable to keep her at a healthy weight so Jackie was urgently moved to another foster home in South Korea. Once she completed her heartworm treatment, Jackie was able to be more active to start losing some weight. Jackie’s foster family in South Korea adored her and finally got her healthy enough to fly to Wildhearts. We are so grateful to them! Jackie’s been settling in wonderfully at her Portland foster home and is equally adored here.

A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE Jackie THINGS FROM her FOSTER family…

Jackie charms everyone she meets, wagging her short little tail, putting her front paws politely on your knee, and thoroughly sniffing your face to say hello. She's smart, charming, stubborn, curious, and definitely full of personality.

In the beginning she would often stop abruptly on walks and meander all over, smelling all of the exciting dog smells around. In a very short time she has become a model walker, trotting alongside and waiting obediently for the okay to cross the street each time. She loves to take walks and also to sit with you in a patch of sunshine quietly. One of our favorite pastimes has been to sit on the front porch together while I drink my morning tea and watch the activity passing by. She is content to sit quietly with you, enjoying being outside and close to a friend.

From the very first night, Jackie has taken to sleeping in her crate perfectly, staying there without a peep through the night. She does the cutest stretches when she comes out in the morning, complete with little piglet groans and then excited prance tapping around for her morning kibble. During the day, if I have to step out for an hour or two, she is mostly content to quietly chew on a toy in her crate, although on a few occasions she has spent the first few minutes doing a sad yodel-howl. We're still working on a little bit of separation anxiety, but she seems to grow more confident and comfortable by the day.

Jackie loves food but is gentle when taking treats and never resource guards. Her absolute favorite treat is purple cabbage and the little crunching sounds she makes while eating it are absolutely adorable.

Jackie has never met a cat, dog, human, or child that she is not happy to meet and curiously check out. She seems to particularly love big dogs and she's great with kids, especially when they're respectful. She's non-reactive with dogs and lives very peacefully with my cat, napping together, touching noses, and more or less ignoring each other otherwise.

She absolutely loves car rides and often almost immediately falls asleep and stays that way for the duration. She hops in willingly and never fails to be excited for adventure whenever she sees us heading towards the car.

A FEW THINGS Jackie IS WORKING ON FROM her FOSTER family…

While Jackie is perfectly potty trained in my house (no accidents since one on the first day!), she often gets overwhelmed in new houses by all the scents and needs to be watched so that she doesn't go to the bathroom inside. I've been working with her in new environments by providing routines and praise for going to the bathroom outside, but she'll need a little more training on this front, especially in places that have other pet smells.

Jackie came here with ear infections, so it is hard to say, but she seems to have a little trouble hearing. She isn't responsive to her name, and it can be hard to get her attention if you're not in her line of sight. She responds quickly to you when she can see you, and with medication her ears are getting better all the time.

Jackie never barks, but she can whine and do a sad country yodel if she feels abandoned. She's getting more and more used to separation, and will need some continued work on making sure she knows that you're going to come back to her when you step out. She likes to follow me around the house and as time has gone on she willingly puts herself in "place" more often and relaxes on her own while I move around the house.
